Let's Get Started: Basics of Cubic Meter
Moving Boxes Fitting in One Cubic Metre
- How Much is One Cubic Metre?: A cubic metre is a unit used to measure volume. Although it’s sometimes spelled 'cubic meter,' the correct spelling is 'cubic metre' here in New Zealand. We’ll be using both versions to make it easier for you to find the information you need. One cubic metre (1 m³) is a cube where each side is 1 metre long. For moving boxes, as shown in the illustration, it takes about 8 mid to large-sized boxes to fill one cubic metre. The boxes don’t need to form a cube; even if placed side by side in a row, they’ll still make up one cubic metre. Now, how do you calculate the cubic metres of your furniture?
-
How to Calculate m³ of an Item: To calculate the cubic metres of an item, simply measure all three dimensions: Length (L), Width (W), and Height (H). Then, use a calculator to multiply these three values together using the formula:
Item Volume (m³) = L x W x H.
Make sure to use the correct units for your measurements—always express the dimensions in metres to get the result in cubic metres. For example, if the depth of your fridge is 64 cm, you should convert it to metres by using 0.64 (m) in your calculations.

How to Use the Result from Our Cubic Metre Calculator
Now that you know the volume of your belongings in cubic metres, you can choose the best moving truck for your needs. Keep in mind that while we strive to load your items as efficiently as possible, there will always be some space that cannot be utilized.
For this reason, we recommend selecting a moving truck that offers at least 10-20% more space than your total calculated volume in cubic metres.
Confirming the Final Moving Cost
